Music and painting share a profound connection, offering a common experience known as “artistic synesthesia”—where auditory stimuli can be transformed into visual effects, and vice versa. Today, the term synesthesia encompasses a wide range of phenomena influenced by new media and sensory stimulations. A more precise yet less commonly used term to describe this might be “sensations triggered by abstract concepts”—a process in which perceptual activities are linked through prediction, and in turn, through comparison.

As an artist, the process of abstracting from auditory sensations to visual schematization makes “seeing” an act of guessing at something external, constructing an “experience of moving from here to there.” This reinterpretation of one art form through the lens of personal awareness might involve intentional selection, removal, or addition. At the same time, when engaging with the work of another musical artist, I reflect on how to interpret rhythmic similarities through materials and patterns of texture, crafting a visual backdrop that serves the narrative while providing cues for interpretation.
